One of the first steps in learning to read is being able to recognize and label symbols. While your baby may not be naming the entire alphabet by the time he's 1 year old, this interlocking set certainly offers a firm foundation for future reading. Each 12-by-12-inch piece contains an easy-to-grasp, pullout letter of the alphabet; there are 50 pieces in all. Parents may need to help young toddlers with assembling the floor mat, since it requires more detailed puzzle-fitting skills. But children as young as 1 year old can learn to fit the letters into the slots by themselves. This also makes a comfortable tumbling mat or a nicely cushioned play area.
