One hundred years ago (when children actually played outside instead of inside with video games all day long), the parks were filled with kids flying kites and floating sailboats. Although kites have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in the last 20 years, it's only recently that model sailboats have returned. This model from Reeves International is an excellent beginner's boat, whose simplicity of design also boasts some authentic sailing features. Fourteen inches long, of solid wood construction, the Dixie Clipper has a solid metal 3-inch rudder painted the same dark blue as the hull beneath the water line. Its mast stands 13 inches high, and it features a mainsail and foresail along its mast and bowsprit. Adjustable lines (known as "sheets") let you tighten the reinforced canvas sails to the necessary tautness. Set sail in your favorite pond, wading pool, or even (on calm days) on a lake, and watch the wind propel your craft along.
