One original idea drove the design of this chemistry set: make it portable! And two basic design changes (from traditional sets) emerged: first, find a way to make many experiments possible with very small amounts of reagent; second, package the equipment in a plastic cabinet that closes up and turns into a carrying case. This set contains over two dozen elements and common compounds, plus safety goggles, plastic pipettes and test tubes, a thermometer, a balance, and other necessary equipment. The driving idea behind "microchemistry" is to eliminate the need for glass, and open flames, by using hot water for all experiments that require heat. But the best part is an extremely comprehensive instruction booklet covering dozens and dozens of experiments, laid out in such a way as to develop key ideas (e.g., the phases of matter, acid and base solutions). It’s a full pre-college chemistry course, and it includes many questions, with answers in the back. Recommended for ages 8 and up. --Richard Farr
